Abstract: Many of the classical Indian percussion instruments result in harmonic tones. This behavior is markedly different from what is expected of a simple circular membrane stretched over a cavity. The cause of such behavior has in part been attributed to the unique construction of the membrane adopted. A widely studied instrument in such regard is Tabla, where the membrane is loaded with paste in the center. The drivers of harmonicity are the choice of materials used for loading, the material of membrane, eccentricity of the applied load as well as the spread and smoothness thereof. Mathematical modelling of such membranes has been part of continuous improvements with multiple studies exploring the parameters which will result in maximally harmonic vibrations of the drum. In the present work, optimization studies were performed using algorithms like Constrained Optimization by Linear Approximations (COBYLA), Dividing Rectangles (DIRECT), Controlled Random Search (CRS) and Improved Stochastic Ranking Evolution Strategy (ISRES) to explore the design space to achieve maximally harmonic vibrations. The algorithms are gradient free search methods of global or local type. Improvements were also made in the formulation of methodology used to search the design space. Such improvements have resulted in obtaining construction parameters which will result in more harmonic tones than previously reported.
